The Town of Chapel Hill Online Permitting Services Informational Website link provides information to help you determine what type of application is necessary for your project. You can also access the Application Profiles of each application type from this website

There is no limit to the project size or cost of construction for applications submitted to the Town of Chapel Hill Online Permitting Services Center.

Yes, we will be adding additional permit types to the Town of Chapel Hill Online Permitting Services in the near future.

An application is deemed complete when a member of the Town staff has reviewed the aplication and all supporting documentation and fees are received. The application and supporting documents may be paper or electronic. Please note that some documents must be physically submitted, by mail or in person, to the Online Permitting Services Center. For an application-specific list of submittal requirements please view the Application Profile page and select the applicaiton that you are submitting.

Yes, you will receive email notifications about your application when the status changes. You will receive email communication at each step of the process:

  • Submit Application (automated notification)
  • Permit Approved (automated notification)
  • Payments Made (automated notification)
  • Permit Issued
  • Inspections
  • Process Complete
NOTE: Check your spam folder if you are not receiving automated notifications from Online Permitting Services.
  1. Log in to the website
  2. Access the “Your Items” section
  3. Choose the permit(s) you wish to pay by checking the box to the left of the address on the permit record.
  4. Select "Pay" from the drop down list, located on top of the search results and then click submit. This will place the item in "Your Cart" and will take you to the checkout screen
  5. Select the items from your cart you wish to pay, select pay now, and then complete the payment form.
All applications require the submission of supporting documents. Accepted file formats include: doc, pdf, jpg, and tiff and size limit is 10MB. Some documents, including sealed plans, must be physically submitted (paper or electronic copy) to the Development Services Center either by mail or in person. For a list of documents required for your application, click here and select the Application Profile of the application you are filing.
Once your permit application is approved and all outstanding fees are paid, your permit will be issued. You will receive instructions via email on how to print your permit from the Town of Chapel Hill Online Permitting Services Center or you can pick it up in person at the Development Services Center located on the 1st Floor of Town Hall at 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

This website is where contractors or homeowners can submit applications for different types of permits without physically coming to the Development Services Center located on the 1st Floor of Town Hall at 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. You will receive email communication at each step of the process:

A representative will be assigned to review and approve your application and will be available for questions as your application moves throughout your permitting process.
